Incidents

Journalist Maduka Thaksala Fernando, attached to the Lake House New media department, has been attacked by trade union members of the current government, appealed to the administration of the institution to hold an impartial inquiry into the matter.

Former Director of the Digital and Innovative media division of Lake House and the founder of "Journalist" social media network Maduka Thaksala Fernando, has been brutally assaulted and threatened to kill by the chairman of Pohottuwa trade union and his goons.

Sri Lankan authorities must thoroughly investigate several recent attacks against journalists, hold those responsible to account, and ensure that journalists can report freely in the country, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today.

A group of journalists and individuals attached to the SLPP broke into the office of Resa newspaper at Lake House, forcibly dragged away the former head of Lake House New Media Division, Maduka Thaksala Fernando and assaulted him.

Most recently, Maduka Thaksala Fernando, head of New Media Department at the state-run Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited, was assaulted on Tuesday morning by a group who he said belonged to the pro-government Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna trade union.

In some instances, those who assaulted media personnel have been identified as belonging to pro-Rajapaksa groups, such as in the attack on Maduka Thaksala Fernando, a journalist at Resa parent company Lake House. He alleges that his attackers belonged to the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna trade union.
